SENEGAL: Idrissa Seck, the Wade Trojan?

Idrissa Seck and ex president Abdoulaye Wade

The empire of the pope of Sopi has shattered. He ended like Carolingian Empire of Charlemagne! The prophetic vision of Me Abdoulaye Wade was a hit in the wing. His political family, at least behind him, will not reign over long decades in Senegal! Unless…

Unlike Charlemagne, Mr. Wade’s heirs did not even wait for his death. During his lifetime, because thirsty for power, they are torn between them! A long succession war ensued between Macky Sall, Idrissa Seck and Karim Wade. From a convocation to the National Assembly to Rebeuss prison, through forced resignations or vexatious political and protocol demotions, everything was good to eliminate, to discredit, to defeat in the sole unacknowledged goal of removing from the presidential road his old brothers. At this game undeniably, Macky Sall, though a novice in politics, won hands down. As a pupil, he rose to the level of master in the art of governing by laws and force. How ingenious to call on good governance not to share power and throw opponents into lions’ food! Not even a crumb of millet between the heirs as it was the case after the death of Charlemagne! Instead of equitable sharing, it is exile or disgrace that is offered.

Macky Sall did not completely get rid of all the heirs of the pope of Sopi.

The straight line to the 2019 presidential election revives tensions between the three heirs of the pope of Sopi. The Wades did not say their last word: they sharpen their weapons. The innocent World Bank report Karim Wade launches a pavement in the fed up, as for the manipulation of justice “political” Senegalese.

With the removal of Karim Wade, Idrissa Seck makes a foot call to his former political family, the PDS.

Macky Sall did not completely get rid of all the heirs of the pope of Sopi. One of them hitherto in ambush, out of the wood these last days. Idrissa Seck launches attacks all over the place. He is surfing the doubts maintained by Ousmane Sonko concerning gas and oil contracts. Achilles heel of the presidential family Sall!

With the removal of Karim Wade, Idrissa Seck makes a foot call to his former political family, the PDS. It must be said that the silence of Karim Wade does not plead in his favor. Will he come back before February 2019? Will he be able to pay his colossal fine? The last visit of the Emir of Qatar to Senegal (trip not planned in his agenda) seems to indicate that the return of the prodigal son of Abdoulaye Wade is in the state impossible. The revelation to public opinion of the World Bank’s report is a desperate attempt, a bottle launched in the Persian Gulf for the sole purpose of calling for help the Senegalese people. Because let’s say it bluntly, the Doha Protocol exists. It was indeed negotiated by the parties, the presence of the Qatari prosecutor in the plane of exile is proof of its enforceability!

The Socialist Party has been beheaded, political neo-movements lack popular seats. It remains only the PDS to guarantee Idrissa Seck a short victory in the second round.

The only solution for the pope of Sopi is to swallow snakes and if necessary Lamprophis fuliginosus! I remember an episode that says a lot about the enmity between the Wade family and Idrissa Seck. Sitting in the office of Secretary General of the Presidency Abdoulaye Baldé, in the presence of Hassan BA, we discussed the response to Latif Coulibaly’s accusations concerning the governance of the pope of Sopi. First hot alarm for the Wade diet that until then gloated! We were in 2003. And during the meeting, was raised the reaction of Idrissa Seck. Where did he go? On vacation on the American beaches? A few months later, this promising young prime minister was forced to resign. In fact, some (those who still want you good!) Whispered in the ear of President Wade that the jurisprudence Habib Bourguiba was his pernicious strategy: let Wade extricate himself in the mud bath Senegalese and appear as a last recourse.

Unless … Idrissa Seck may be the last chance for the pope of Sopi to see his prophetic vision come true or at least back up his legacy. The Socialist Party has been beheaded, political neo-movements lack popular seats. It remains only the PDS to guarantee Idrissa Seck a short victory in the second round. In the balance of the negotiations, a judicial rehabilitation of Karim Wade and a leading position.
The two heirs will have obtained their revenge on Macky Sall, will open later a new war of succession between them. But we are not there yet !
