LIBERIA: George Weah elected President of the Republic.

That’s it, Liberia has a new president. And his name is George Weah. The victory of the former football star, Ballon d’Or in 1995, was announced this Thursday, December 28, 2017, late afternoon.

In 2005, for his first bid, Gorges Weah was defeated by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the second round. In 2011, the same Ellen Jonhson eliminated him when he ran for vice president. On October 10, the one who became meanwhile senator from the province of Montserrado came in first in the first round of the presidential election with 38.4%.

The second round that was to be held last November 7 was rejected by the Supreme Court after an appeal filed by Charles Brumskine, who came third in the first round. The vote finally took place on Tuesday, December 26th. Gorges Weah was elected with 61.5% of the votes after counting 98.1% of the votes. Against 38.5% for his opponent, Vice President Joseph Boakai.
