SENEGAL – Demonstrations following the arrest of Ousmane Sonko, the government warns through a statement

It is through a press release dated March 4, 2021 that the government leaves its reserve.Faced with the protests noted in the last 24 hours following the arrest of Pastef leader Ousmane Sonko on the way to his aborted summons before the judge. The Senegalese authorities recall in this communiqué that measures will be taken to counter this wind of resistance.

The press release: The demonstrations noted on Wednesday 03 and Thursday 04 March 2021, in flagrant violation of the state of health disaster proclaimed on 20 February 2021, have given rise to regrettable acts of vandalism and violence, having unfortunately led to a man’s death in the person of Sheikh Ibrahima COLY.

The Government expresses its condolences and compassion to the family of the victim.An investigation was conducted to determine the circumstances of the death.

The Government strongly condemns the acts of violence, looting and destruction of public and private property and expresses its solidarity with the natural and legal persons affected by these acts, including the instigators, Perpetrators and accomplices will be sought and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

In addition, the Government warns against biased coverage of events by certain media, likely to stir up hatred and violence.

The Government will continue to take all necessary measures to maintain public order in accordance with the laws and regulations in force.
