GCAP Senegal, a member of GCAP GLOBAL, which brings together some 100 civil society organizations, is advocating for a transfer of the technology needed to produce messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines in Senegal. The aim is to increase efforts to convince partners to accelerate this process for Africa.

To accelerate the transfer of technology needed for the production of RNA messenger vaccines in Senegal, GCAP Senegal is advocating. In a public statement, the initiators note that the objective is to increase efforts to convince technical and financial partners, pharmaceutical companies and research institutes to accelerate this process towards Africa. GCAP-Senegal has increased its research and meetings as part of its Agilty fund project supported by the Peoples vaccines Alliance (PVA), to contribute to the acceleration of this process and the establishment of the regional mRNA vaccine production hub in Senegal.

Note that in March 2022, on the second anniversary of COVID-19, GCAP worked with Peoples vaccines (PVA) by engaging communities in the fight against inequalities in access to the Covid19 vaccine. “It is in the wake of this experience and the lessons learned from the pandemic that GCAP has decided to promote, through strong advocacy, the transfer of mRNA technology and intellectual property rights to the low-income country.”, the press release says.

As a reminder, on the margins of the European Union-African Union summit, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the first six countries to receive the technology needed to produce messenger RNA vaccines (mRNA) on the African continent. Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia have all applied and have been selected as beneficiaries. In Senegal, this project is called MADIBA and represents the beginning of pharmaceutical independence and the hope of an entire continent, according to the initiators.
