UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on Tuesday 18 July 2023 for action to build a better world, in a message on the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day.

The annual celebration pays tribute to Mr. Mandela’s 67 years of service to humanity as a human rights activist, prisoner of conscience, man of international peace and the first democratically elected President of post-apartheid South Africa. The head of the UN described the former leader, who passed away in 2013, as “a colossus by courage and conviction.”

Guterres said the best way to honour his legacy is to act against the poison of racism, discrimination, hatred and the legacies of colonialism.

And through actions to promote equality, human rights and especially justice,” he added.

The Secretary-General noted that poverty, hunger and inequality are on the rise today, with many countries drowning in debt.

Meanwhile, the climate crisis is destroying the lives of the people who least contributed to it, and the iniquitous and outdated international financial system is not fulfilling its function as a global safety net.

“We have the power to solve each of these problems,” Guterres said.

“As we commemorate the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, let us be inspired by his spirit of humanity, dignity and justice. Let us unite with women and girls, youth and change agents around the world. And let’s act to build a better world,” he added.

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated every year on its anniversary, July 18, and people around the world are encouraged to volunteer for 67 minutes, either in their communities or virtually.
