The current president of Haiti jovenel Moïse was assassinated on the night of Tuesday 6 to Wednesday 7 July 2021 by a group of unidentified individuals. This murderous attack took place in his private residence in Pétion-Ville located in the department of the West and in the district of Port-au-Prince, the capital and most populated of the communes of Haiti, which would have nearly 2,754,812 inhabitants 

The Haitian people woke up this Wednesday, July 7, 2021 in disarray and dismay after the announcement of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. It should also be noted that the first lady was severely shot.

Jovenel Moïse is a Haitian statesman and entrepreneur. He was born on 26 June 1968 in Trou-du-Nord. Candidate of the Tèt Kale party, he was president of the country on 07 February 2017 at his death. His assassination comes at a time when the country has been shaken by demonstrations for a very long time. These demonstrators accuse the Jovenel regime of being corrupt.

In a statement the Haitian Prime Minister Dr Claude Joseph declares the state of siege and condemns this odious, barbaric and inhuman act. He also called for calm and reassured the populations on the security of the country. He also recalled that “all measures are taken to guarantee the continuity of the State and protect the Nation”.

Historical reminder, coincidence or not, July 07, 2021 marks the 220 th anniversary of the declaration of the Independence of Haiti that was proclaimed by Toussaint Louverture on the date of July 07, 1801. The country thus became the first Black nation to have liberated itself from the Western colonial yoke. Trouble of history, the father of independence, Toussaint Louverture was captured and killed by France two years later, on April 7, 1803.
