Reactions are multiplying within the international community to warn of the «disastrous consequences» of a military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Niger to restore constitutional order.

In an interview granted, Monday, August 21, 2023, to certain media outlets, taken over by Apanews, the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, rejected the military option defended by the community organization.

“I do not find it fair that the Economic Community of West African States decided to intervene militarily in Niger. Following this decision, Mali and Burkina Faso also warned that such military intervention in Niger would be tantamount to waging war against them. A military intervention in Niger would mean that instability would spread to many African countries,” he said.

He also said that he hoped that “social peace and stability would be restored in Niger as soon as possible and that the people of Niger would protect democracy and hold elections as soon as possible. As Türkiye, we will continue to support the people of Niger, a friendly and brother country.”
