His family announced his death at Berlingske, the country’s leading conservative daily, on Wednesday 14 July 2021, after a long illness. His name is known in all the Muslim countries that have blamed him for touching the most important symbol of Islam. The cartoon in question, entitled “The face of Muhammad” and published by the conservative Danish daily Jyllands-Posten in September 2005, showed the prophet with a turban shaped like a bomb. This image shocked the Muslim world and led to a serious foreign policy crisis in Denmark.

Moreover, during the last moments of his life, Kurt Westergaard lived under police surveillance. In 2010, a 28-year-old Somali broke into his home, probably armed with a knife to kill him. But he was finally arrested by the Danish police. As a reminder, in 2015, the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, which had published the cartoon again three years earlier, was the victim of an attack that killed 12 people.

It should be noted that Kurt Westergaard worked at Jyllands-Posten, one of the main Danish dailies, and according to the conservative daily Berlingske, the drawing in question had already been printed once before, without having been the subject of much controversy.
