SENEGAL: President signs decree criminalizing rape.

It is a real sigh of relief for the associations of women who complained of the resurgence of rapes in the country. The President of the Republic signed this Friday January 10, 2020 the decree implementing the law which criminalizes rape and pedophilia.

It is in the presence of the Minister of Families, Gender and Child Protection, Ndeye Saly Diop Dieng, and the Minister of Justice Me Malick Sall that President Macky Sall signed the decree implementing the law. toughens the penalties on rape and pedophilia. A law passed unanimously in Parliament on Monday January 6, 2020.

Henceforth, individuals convicted of these acts will be sentenced to heavy terms of more than 20 years in prison. This is why the State intends to open a DNA test center for people suspected of being raped.

Remember that over the past five years, many women have been victims of rape followed by murder. A situation that had sparked protests across the country from women’s movements and associations.
