A semi-final and the final of the Africa Cup of Nations will take place at the Olembé stadium in Yaoundé.  The reopening of the stadium was announced on Sunday 30 January by the African Football Confederation (CAF), in a statement. This decision comes after the CAF received the report on the tragic stampede that killed eight people on Monday, January 24. 


The Caf decided to reopen the Olembé stadium in Yaoundé. A tragic stampede on Monday 24 January, which caused the death of eight people, led the Cameroonian authorities to close the stadium. The semi-final and final of the Africa Cup of Nations will finally take place there, according to a statement from the African Football Confederation (CAF)

It announced this in a statement which states in substance: “The Organizing Committee of the CAF unanimously decided to lift the suspension imposed at Olembé Stadium and to authorize one of the half-The report analyzed the tragic circumstances that resulted in 38 injuries and eight deaths. He also highlighted recommendations and interventions to ensure that a tragedy of this nature never happens again. ‘

The deadly stampede of Monday, January 24, 2021, has as its origin the opening of a door by the security forces in front of a human tide. It was just before the eighth final between Cameroon and Comoros. In his report, the Cameroonian Minister of Sports and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the competition pointed out several measures recommended by the government to ensure that this type of drama could no longer occur, at Olembé stadium as in the others: among other things, more screening points, zigzag access to the lines leading to the gates, an increase in the number of entry doors, an increase in the number of law enforcement officers and a ban on children under the age of 11.

As for the Indomitable Lions, Cameroon’s national team, they decided to give part of their bonus to the families of the victims of the stampede.
