The Muslim community of Senegal, and the murray in particular, commemorated the Grand Magal of Touba which marks the departure in exile of Sheik Ahmadou Bamba, founder of Mouridism, the 18 safar 1313 coinciding with August 10, 1895. This day during which the Sheikh Thanksgiving is celebrated every year by thousands of faithful all over the world.
More than four million faithful were present in Touba to celebrate the Magal on October 17, 2019. A few days after the inauguration of the Massalikoul Jinaan mosque in Dakar, the Mourides faithful have mostly responded to the call of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba to commemorate the day of his departure in exile.
Recall that the Magal was first celebrated in 1925 in Diourbel by the Sheikh himself and his followers. He recommends, to this day, reciting the Quran, chanting his poems and preparing delicious meals for pilgrims.
Every year, Mourid disciples perpetuate this tradition by commemorating the Magal as indicated by the Sheikh.
It should also be noted that the call to celebrate the Magal at Touba was launched in 1946 by the third Khalif of Mourides, Serigne Fallou Mbacké, son of Sheikh Ahmadou Bamba.
