At the 20th Congress of ASEA (Association of African Electricity Companies) held at the Abdou DIOUF International Conference Centre (CICAD) from 14 to 21 July 2022, the issue of OIL and GAS was at the table of discussions.

The AHMEYIM (GTA) GREAT TURTLE deposit was discovered in 2015 and has been developed since 2019. It revolves around the development of TWO OFFSHORE GAS FIELDS namely TURTLE and AHMEYIM. This is the first of four Phase 1 development wells to be drilled approximately 120 km offshore and under 2850 m of water.

Senegal is developing it with Mauritania for 2023. The Mauritanian and Senegalese governments signed, in February 2018,
an agreement to develop this transboundary gas field.

On February 28, 2022, Kosmos Energy, an American company, announced that infrastructure works for the Ahmeyim Great Turtle Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project had progressed steadily in 2021 and are now about 70% complete.

The Ahmeyim Great Turtle gas field marks the start of oil production in Senegal and therefore a step towards greater energy empowerment.
