Pastef party leader Ousmane Sonko held a press conference on Thursday 19 January. This was after the judge decided to send him back to trial in the case against Adji Sarr, the case in which he is accused of rape and threat of death.

In his meeting with the press, Ousmane Sonko repeats to anyone who wants to hear him that the case must be closed without further action, given the evidence that has been brought since the beginning of the investigation.

He also reiterated his firm intention to be a candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
“To all Senegalese, what I said in 2021 and I repeat it I have always invoked my legitimate constitutional right to resistance and until the end of my life I will resist, no one can prevent me, please God, to be a candidate in 2024 and I do not see the judge who will sentence me to 5 years in prison in this case,” says the Leader of the Patriotes.

He also warns, and asks everyone to take responsibility, “Let everyone take responsibility because people are in their own bubble, they engage in conciliations, they manipulate texts, they make the law say what they want, they think it will continue to happen in this country”.
And to add with a firm tone: “Too much is too much, you have to stop, all the people who have been in prison, they are someone’s sons, how you can take people and send them to prison without any basis and you quietly return home to find your wife and child.”
