President Alassane Dramane Ouattara announced this Thursday, March 5, 2020, that he would not seek a new term. The Ivorian head of state spoke to parliamentarians gathered in Congress and said he would not be a candidate in the next presidential election scheduled for October 31, 2020.

A surprising and perhaps even unexpected announcement which puts an end to a long suspicion of the Ivorian opposition. Alassane Ouattara has chosen to respect the constitution and avoid the Ivorian people reliving another armed conflict. Here are his words before the deputies:

“During the two mandates that you entrusted to me at the head of our beautiful country, I have always attached very particular importance to the respect of my commitments. In the same spirit, I had on several occasions indicated, at the time of the adoption of the Constitution of the Third Republic in 2016, which I did not wish to stand for a new presidential term. Consequently, I would like to solemnly announce that I have decided not to be a candidate in the presidential election ” .
