CHAD – Central African refugees fear being forgotten

Surrounded by countries in crisis, Chad has just adopted a particularly progressive law cited by the UN as a model for asylum. However, this model is threatened by the exponential influx of Sudanese refugees. Humanitarian workers are calling for help to support the authorities in Ndjamena and not to abandon the 600,000 other refugees already in the country, such as Cameroonians fleeing the abuses of Boko Haram in the west, but also more than 120,000 Central Africans in the south, this Wednesday, July 12, 2023.
Elasko Sirikizi is a couturier, father of four children. For ten years the civil war has torn her country, the Central African Republic. He lost the use of his legs after five years of wandering in the bush.
It was his wife who carried him here on his back. Even when we came here, we tried to force her, we raped her… Every time … she remembers the facts. I console her every time,” he says.
He survived thanks to his sewing machine, which he rented for 5,000 CFA francs a month, the equivalent of 7.50 euros. The only daily activity that gives me food is [sewing only]. Now it’s like that. People are all going to do their field work because it’s raining, so there are no customers.… We only manage the galley, it’s like we’re good at it,” he adds.
“I have to manage…”
Elasko Sirikizi continues: The market is almost 800 meters away… I can’t move a km, I can’t. So where I am, it’s like I’m a prisoner of life,” he says.
A market built over the years by other refugees like Amadou Yago, a shopkeeper who fled the Seleka raids in 2014. Thank God, here I am safe. But of course, I always think of my country, you can never forget the country where you were born. But so far the Central African Republic is not stable, so I have to manage here by selling the few products you see.”
A call for international aid for Chad
In the absence of a possible return, UNHCR is trying to support refugees in their activities. But since the beginning of the crisis in Sudan and the massive influx of refugees to Chad, humanitarian workers have redirected most of their financial and human resources to the east.
“If we do not want a major humanitarian crisis in Chad, in addition to the humanitarian and security crisis in Sudan, it is now, really now, that significant assistance from the international community for Chad and humanitarian organizations is needed,” said Jérôme Merlin, Head of Operations in Chad for the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees.
The Central African refugees are looking with concern at their country where a controversial constitutional referendum is being prepared that should allow the president to run for a third term and could lead to further violence according to the UN.
