The Movement for the Defense of Democracy (M2D) held an important meeting on Saturday, April 24, 2021. The objective of the meeting was to define the strategic orientations and evaluate the actions taken.

The members renewed their resolute commitment to the movement and reaffirmed their determination to continue the struggle, on behalf of the Senegalese people, for the safeguarding of democracy and the rule of law. They reach out to all the democratic and social forces of the country to federate initiatives and mutualize means and resources in order to give more effectiveness to the struggles of the people for democracy.

The M2D notes with regret that President Sall has once again betrayed the word he gave to Serigne Mountakha Mbacké, Khalife General of the Mourides, as well as to all the Senegalese people, to release all detainees arrested in connection with the events of February and March 2021.
The M2D wishes to inform the Senegalese people that 30 people are still being held hostage, including 24 in Diourbel prison, 4 in Ziguinchor, 1 in Fort B and 1 in Rebeuss.

The M2D calls for the release of these detainees and calls on all the actors involved in this case, including the judicial family, to act in the direction of appeasement in order to turn this painful page.

With regard to local elections, the M2D strongly supports the position of the National Resistance Front (FRN) and confirms that the audit of the file, the evaluation of the process, the revision of the lists and the other steps of the process can hold over a period of about 8 months, which technically makes it possible to hold the elections in December 2021.

As for President Macky Sall, the M2D invites it to show more lucidity and responsibility to understand that the massive revolt of the Senegalese people against its policy and its practices is not a temporary conjunctural fact that it could ward off by bandaging the muscles. Rather than choosing the uncertain and adventurous path of delaying tactics, manipulation or threats, the M2D urges him to rise up, despite the trauma suffered, to avoid further setbacks.

The M2D will face the press, in the coming days, to present its memorandum on the events of February-March and the form and date of its next activities.
