SENEGAL – THIRD CANDIDACY: 64 organisations and personalities block against Macky Sall

The Contact Group of the Yewwi Coalition led by Habib Sy who has been working for a few days to federate all the forces opposed to the idea of a 3rd candidacy of President Macky Sall and his governance around a common platform has succeeded
Former Liberal Minister of State Habib Sy and his team from the Yewwi Coalition Contact Group succeeded in their mission to unite all forces opposed to the idea of a 3rd candidacy of President Macky Sall and his governance around a platform wrestling commune. On Wednesday 22 March 2004, sixty-four (64) political organizations, trade unions, citizens, civil society and independent personalities without the PDS signed the act of creation of the “Platform of struggle for the defense and consolidation of democracy” to be launched soon.
The Contact Group of the Yewwi Coalition led by Habib Sy, which has been working for a few days to unite all the forces opposed to the idea of a third candidacy of President Macky Sall and its governance around a common platform, has succeeded.
The Platform for the Struggle for the Defense and Consolidation of Democracy was launched on the baptismal fonts on Wednesday 22 March in Dakar and its official launch scheduled very soon. It brings together sixty four (64) political organizations, trade unions, citizens, civil society and independent personalities who have joined to set up a platform.
In a statement released yesterday, the members of this new framework of struggle for the defense and consolidation of the democratic achievements in Senegal, to justify their approach, have evoked the current situation of Senegal which according to them, “is in one of the darkest moments in its political history.” This state of affairs is manifested by the confiscated individual and collective freedoms, the mismanagement erected in mode of management, the public speech abused, arrests all over the place and selling off for a political clientele our land and other natural resources (minerals, energy, fisheries, forestry, water, etc.), deplore in particular the sixtyfour signatory organizations in a public statement. The fundamentals of democracy are threatened by a biased electoral process with real threats to the Constitution.
In addition, the will to betray his word given by seeking a third morally unacceptable and constitutionally illegal candidacy is increasingly displayed and assumed by President Macky Sall and his pimps. On top of that, there is unprecedented violence against demonstrators disarmed by a power in need of reference,” the leaders of this platform for fighting for the defence and consolidation of democracy continued to criticize.
THE PDS, THE ABSENT ONE
The Senegalese Democratic Party is not one of the sixty-four political organizations, trade unions, citizens, civil society and independent personalities signatories to the Platform for Struggle for the Defense and Consolidation of Democratic Achievements. This is not the case for the former Prime Minister Aminata Touré, who is well among the signatories. The former Liberal party in power thus seems to apply to the letter its warning to the leaders of the coalition Yewwi Askan Wi who approached him on March 3 to exchange on this platform. Indeed, although welcoming this «initiative», the leaders of the Pds had formally opposed their veto to the accession of the former Prime Minister, Aminata Touré, who left the majority ship after the Head of State’s decision to remove him from the presidency of the National Assembly. The PDS rejects any framework of struggle with Mrs Aminata Touré who during eleven years of the governance of Benno bokk yakaar was one of the main responsible for the decline of the rule of law, democracy and poverty that affects today’s Senegalese», had accused the PDS in a public statement.

IVORY COAST – The PDCI-RDA march postponed to June 14 to support Tidjane Thiam

Initially scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the major march of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire – African Democratic Rally (PDCI-RDA), the main opposition party in Côte d’Ivoire, will finally take place on Saturday, June 14, 2025. This postponement was announced by the party’s Executive Secretary, who points out that the decision came after discussions between the PDCI leadership and the authorities of the Abidjan department. The details of these discussions have not been made public.
This demonstration, highly anticipated by the party’s activists and supporters, aims to support the candidacy of its president, Tidjane Thiam, in the presidential election of 2025, and to protest against his removal from the electoral list. A decision that the party qualifies as unfair and unacceptable, arguing for the right of all Ivorian citizens, including those with dual nationality, to participate in the political life of the country.
The route of the march remains unchanged: the protesters will leave from the SOCOCE space of the 2 Plateaux, in the municipality of Cocody, to head towards the headquarters of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI). The party calls for a strong peaceful mobilization in order to convey a clear message: demand inclusive, transparent and peaceful elections.
The removal of Tidjane Thiam and other opposition figures is mainly based on the issue of dual nationality, a legal provision that continues to be debated as the election approaches. The PDCI, which sees in Thiam a rally candidate capable of unifying the Ivorians, intends to make this march a highlight of its campaign and its democratic fight.
