Former President of the United States, Barack Obama, is in mourning. His grandmother, Mama Sarah Obama, his grandfather’s second wife, died in Kenya at the age of 99. The announcement of the death of Barack Obama’s grandmother was made by his son Marsat Onyango on Monday, March 29, 2021. The president of the “Mama Sarah Obama Foundation” was known for her support of disadvantaged families in her country in general and her village in particular. His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at the Muslim cemetery of Kisumu.
Portrayed as an actress committed to the service of her community, Mamah Sara Obama was a tireless contributor to charitable work for underprivileged populations or orphans. Raila Odinga, l’ancien premier ministre du Kenya, s’est aussi joint aux témoignages car il considère la grand-mère de l’ancien président américain comme “un symbole de résilience et de confiance pour la femme africaine, avec une capacité unique à faire face aux défis de la vie […] Elle a utilisé l’ascension de son petit-fils le président Barack Obama pour promouvoir l’éducation des filles et lutter contre les maux sociaux grâce à sa fondation.”
Barack Obama a rencontré pour la première fois Mama Sarah en 1988 alors qu’il était en visite au Kenya chez son père Barack Sir décédé 6 ans plus tôt. Une occasion pour lui de découvrir celle qui a éduqué son père. Depuis lors, il a gardé d’excellentes relations avec elle. Mama Sarah avait d’ailleurs effectué le déplacement pour assister à la cérémonie d’investiture de son petit-fils, Barack Obama, en 2009. Ils se sont rencontrés à nouveau au village de Kagelo a l’occasion de l’inauguration d’un centre sportif fondé par la demi-soeur de Barack Obama, Auma Obama.
