Morocco’s Ambassador to Kenya, El Mokhtar Ghambou, issued an appeal to the Kenyan government on Sunday, 8 August 2021. It was one of the most watched shows in this country. The objective is to support the plan of autonomy presented to his country but also to find a solution to the artificial conflict around the question of the Moroccan Sahara.

On the Kenyan national TV channel (KTN), the Moroccan diplomat, El Mokhtar Ghambou, reiterated the importance of the autonomy plan presented by the Cherifian kingdom to the Kenyan government. He called on Kenya to join the struggle to save the Moroccan Sahara. I appeal to the Kenyan government, which currently sits on the Security Council as a non-permanent member, to support our plan for autonomy of the Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty,” said this weekend the guest of the Kenyan show “My Story” on KTN.

The ambassador also said that the Moroccan autonomy plan, presented in 2007 to the UN, offers a “practical” and “realistic” solution to the regional dispute in Moroccan Sahara. He stressed the importance of taking seriously the problem of separatist movements in Africa that are present in at least 23 African countries. According to El Ghambou, “asking Kenya to change its position vis-à-vis the Sahara is not an exaggerated demand because Kenya has always defended the territorial integrity of African countries”.

The ambassador also welcomed the Kenyan government’s decision to examine the possibility of opening a residential embassy in Rabat in the coming months. He also stressed that the win-win aspect of Morocco-Kenya cooperation is justified by the complementarity of the two economies.

It should be noted that Morocco has always maintained good relations with Kenya. The ambassador recalled that the famous explorer, Ibn Battouta, was the first Moroccan traveller to set foot on Kenyan soil in the 14th century. The diplomat also explained that Kenyan history holds the deep friendship between the founder of the Kenyan nation, Jomo Kenyatta, and the late King Hassan II.
