This independent medical counter-evaluation, carried out at the request of the relatives of the young man who died in 2016, contradicts the latest forensic evaluation that exonerates the gendarmes. By Leparisien
The Adama Traoré case is increasingly turning into a battle of judicial and medical expertise. What is at stake? Try to establish the causes of the death of this young man of 24 years, on July 19, 2016, a day of heat, in the barracks of the gendarmes of Persan, nearly two hours after his arrest in his town of Beaumont-sur-Oise (Val-d’Oise). After escaping his first arrest, he was arrested after a chase in the house where he had hidden.
According to our information, a new expertise – the fourth and the second in private – validates the thesis of asphyxiation during immobilization, a scenario that Adama Traoré’s family has been supporting since the beginning. She was the one who commissioned a professor of medicine to look into a medical forensic counter-expertise dated March 24 that exonerated the gendarmes.This Parisian professor of medicine has a completely different analysis of the facts.
This specialist in systemic diseases, who worked on the case files, was asked to answer six questions related to the young man’s death. From his analysis, he retained the physiopathological scenario: «Death follows an asphyxic syndrome, which follows a cardiogenic edema», he wrote in his conclusions of June 2. According to this professor, this edema is itself a result of “asphyxiation positional by the ventral plating” which led to “the placing in the body position hindering the normal exchange of gas and with the impossibility of freeing itself from this position”.
Expertise validated by specialist doctors
In its conclusions, the independent expert does not identify any other cause of death. Most importantly, he is in favour of a death “following an asphyxial syndrome by ventral plating”. A scenario that highlights the conditions of the arrest and immobilization of Adama Traoré.
“This counter-expertise was carried out by a professor of internal medicine at a prestigious Parisian hospital. The conclusions of this report are very clear: the death of Adama Traoré is the result of the ventral tackle exercised by the three gendarmes, reacts Me Yassine Bouzrou, lawyers of the family of the young man. In his view, this independent expertise has “the same probative value” as the expertise ordered by justice. “This report was placed on the trial file, so it is contradictory, according to the law,” adds the criminal.
Finally, Mr. Bouzrou believes that “unlike the experts appointed by the judges”, the independent doctors who carried out the counter-experts are “all specialists in the diseases mentioned in the file”. Counsel argues that given their expertise, their “findings are compelling in the face of those that exclude ventral plating as the cause of Adama Traore’s death.” Recall in this case, two judicial appraisals have already ruled out the responsibility of the gendarmes.
