GUINEA – ECOWAS suspends the country

The leaders of the Member States of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) decided on Wednesday, 8 September 2021, to suspend Guinea from the decision-making bodies of the organization.This decision was motivated by the coup d’état led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.

ECOWAS made a firm decision to suspend Guinea on Wednesday, 8 September. The coup led by elements of the special forces group led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, on Sunday, September 5, has just known its first consequences. The ECOWAS “decided to suspend Guinea from all its decision-making bodies, and calls for these decisions to be endorsed by the African Union and the United Nations,” Burkina Faso’s foreign minister, Alpha Barry, told Ouagadougou. 

This decision by ECOWAS may fall on deaf ears because the military is determined to go all the way. It is also important to point out that ECOWAS has begun to lose its legitimacy in the eyes of the people. The question we should ask ourselves is where was this same ECOWAS when Alpha Condé was doing his coup de force to get a third mandate?

The ECOWAS finds itself in a situation comparable to that experienced after the August 2020 putsch in neighbouring Mali.

The organization decided to send a “high-level mission” to Guinea on Thursday, 9 September “to discuss with the country’s new authorities
