Former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo returns to the political arena. He has just formed the Party of African Peoples – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI). His speech this Sunday, October 17, 2021 at the Sofitel Hotel Ivoire in Cocody during a party constitutive congress. He indicated that this action is a door that opens in preparation for his withdrawal into politics.
Following the creation of this party, former president Laurent Gbagbo was elected as president of this new political party. Personalities such as Sébastien Dano Djédjé, the President of the Constitutive Congress, were noticed. The latter presented the name of the acronym, the emblem and the colours of the new Party.
Former president Laurent Gbagbo explained the importance of the creation of this party but also its future withdrawal from the political ring imposed by its age according to him “We created the PPA-CI, our part, it is a structure to prepare my withdrawal. Dear comrades, my ambition today is to leave. At this age, the wisdom of this journey is to prepare to leave,’ he said.
According to his supporters, this new political act now marks a new beginning in political dialogue, but also the strengthening of social cohesion in the country. Côte d’Ivoire went through political unrest in 2010, which led to the sending of former President Gbagbo to The Hague. Recently returned to the country, his goal is to continue working on reconciliation among Ivorians.
Laurent Gbagbo was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the case of the “robbery” of the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) in 2018.
On the political ring, his allies will certainly face his wife Simone Gbagbo with whom he is in divorce proceedings.
