On December 26th 2017, George Weah was elected president of Liberia with 61.5 percent of the vote, succeeding Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The former Golden Ball was sworn in on Monday, January 22, 2018, in the late morning before tens of thousands of people at the Samuel-Doe Stadium in Monrovia.

Speaking to the cheering crowd, the new president promised, “I took an oath before you and before Almighty God. Rest assured, I will not let you down. He placed his mandate under the banner of the fight against corruption and a more transparent management of the state: “We owe our fellow citizens clarity on fundamental issues such as land ownership, freedom of expression and sharing resources and responsibilities “.

It was in the presence of several foreign heads of state: the Guinean Alpha Conde, the Togolese Faure Gnassingbe, the Ghanaian Nana Akufo-Ado, the Gabonese Ali Bongo, the Congolese Denis Sassou-Nguesso, the Malian Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, and that the president of Senegal, Macky Sall.
