La Liga, the Spanish football championship, intends to open an investigation after a violation of the Covid-19 protocol by FC Barcelona players. The latter met this Monday, May 4, 2021, at the home of their captain, Lionel Messi, for a meal and an exchange on the rest of the season. But since the gathering of a dozen people is now banned in Spain, the players of the Barça broke the rules. The Public Health Agency (Catalan Regional Health Agency) will look into this case and decide whether to go further,’ said Pere Aragonés, Vice-President of the Catalan Regional Government, on Tuesday.

Catalan football players could miss this small party organized at their star, Lionel Messi. La Liga does not intend to leave this case so easily since the stars must lead the way in the fight against the spread of Covid-19 in Spain, a country that already has more than 3 million reported cases and has more than 78,000 deaths. The Catalans, victorious on Saturday 2 but against Valencia (2 – 3), wanted to take stock of how to approach the last 4 matches of the championship in order to win the final title. However, they chose the wrong period because the Catalan regional government is waging an intense fight against the spread of the virus.

The Barcelona players and their companions violated the Covid-19 protocol, which prohibits the gathering of a dozen people. They could be sanctioned by the Spanish football governing body.We would like to call on everyone to respect the measures and to ask these people who have a public reputation to do so in a more intense way, because it generates exemplary results,’ added the Vice-President of the Catalan regional government, Pere Aragonés.

Note that this is not the first time this has happened in Spain. Earlier during the pandemic, CF Seville and Gijon had been investigated.
