LIGA – Atletico de Madrid paves the way for FC Barcelona

Blaugranas can gloat. In this tight race for the title of Spanish champion, the slightest point lost is worth it. Atletico Madrid lost this Sunday, April 25, 2021 against the Basques of Athletic Bilbao (1 – 2) on the margins of the 33rd day of the championship. Colchoneros no longer have their destiny in their hands. They are two points ahead of FC Barcelona which has a late match on Thursday 29 April against Granada. Diego Simeone’s men will also cross FC Barcelona two days before the end of the Liga. This will probably be the title match.
Lionel Messi’s teammates can rub their hands. The Atletico de Madrid left 3 precious points against Athletic Bilbao five days before the end of the championship. The colchoneros were punished from the start in the 8th minute by a goal from the head of Alejandro Berenguer on a cross of Ander Capa deflected by Madrid defender Felipe Augusto. The Basques even had the ball from 2 to 0 in the 59th minute but Oihan Sancet found the crossbar of the Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The Atletico managed to equalize on a corner thanks to its Montenegrin central defender, Stefane Savic’. But, after trying to get the goal of the victory, the colchoneros left Basques defender Inigo Martinez free to score, who, with a header on a corner, cheated for the second time in the match goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the 87th minute. Luis Suarez’s teammates gave everything in the final seconds of the match but they lost (1 – 2).
In case of victory against Granada on Thursday 29 April at 5pm at Camp Nou, the Barcelona team will occupy the first place of the Liga with 1 point advantage over the colchoneros. This defeat of Diego Simeone’s men against the Basques confirms their difficulty this season away in the Liga. Indeed, the last success of the Atlético de Madrid outside its bases dates from 28 February 2021 on the lawn of Villarreal (0 – 2).
Everything remains possible despite everything since the two teams will meet again on May 8 at Camp Nou on the sidelines of the 36th day of the championship. A match probably at the end of which the winner of the Liga will be known if the two teams do not experience other setbacks. Be careful, Real Madrid can still believe it.
