In Niger, the head of the junta, Abdourahamane Tiani, announced on the evening of Saturday, August 19, 2023 a three-year transition before the return to constitutional order.

“Our ambition is not to confiscate power. The transition period will not exceed three years. In the meantime, political parties are invited to submit their transition vision within 30 days,” he said. In ECOWAS, this exit of General Tiani is considered a non-event.

“ECOWAS no longer accepts any prolonged transition in the region.” In any case, according to Security Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah, no prolonged transition is admissible. ECOWAS no longer accepts any prolonged transition in the region. They (the military in power) just have to prepare to pass the baton as soon as possible. The sooner they return power to civilians, the sooner they will focus on their primary responsibility to defend Niger’s territorial integrity,’ Musah told the BBC yesterday.

The sub-regional organization has already activated its military force. It is waiting for the approval of the West African leaders to land in Niamey and dislodge the putschists.
