The President of the Republic of Senegal, Macky Sall, took advantage of the celebration at the end of 2020 to pardon eight hundred and fifty-four (854) people who had been convicted of various offences. According to the communiqué of the Ministry of Justice of January 1, 2021, these prisoners who have just been released, were imprisoned in the various penal institutions of the country.
The President of the Republic, Macky Sall, has made the easing of prison congestion one of his priorities. The goal is to give pardoned inmates a second chance. At the end of 2020, 854 people were granted the presidential pardon. Such a decision is always taken by the Head of State on the occasion of the end of the year festival but also on the Independence Day commemorating 4 April each year.
Seven hundred and eighty-two (782) received total remission of sentences, thirty-four (34) received partial remission of sentences, including twelve (12) minors, twenty-three (23) seriously ill, three (03) commutations of life sentences in twenty (20) years of criminal imprisonment.
This measure by the Senegalese head of state is also part of the fight against the spread of Covid-19 in the country. Aware of the difficult conditions in prisons, President Macky Sall is thus giving the opportunity to improve prison conditions by reducing the number of prisoners.
