This Monday, October 17, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, held the shock of the season; the biggest sporting event of the year: the 2022 Ballon d’Or. In a ceremony masterfully presented by the former Ivorian international Didier Drogba, Sadio Mané, author of an exceptional season, was applauded by two. Once, he is in second place in the Ballon d’Or classification. This consecration will remain forever in the annals of the footballing register because no African player had achieved such a feat since the coronation of former footballer George Weah in 1995. And a second time, when he receives the “Prix Socrates”, a first for an African footballer.

When he receives this award, here are the first words of Sadio Mané: “I am very happy to win it. Like I said, it’s a special price for me. It motivates me to give my best out of the field. It was a kid’s dream to do the most for those people around me, or even further away. I know where I come from, I know the reality. I try to do what I can, as best I can.”

Under the fine rain of this month of October, thousands of round balloon lovers were massed in front of the Châtelet theatre in Paris. We knew that Karim Benzema was the ultra-favorite to receive the Ballon d’Or this Monday night. We were hoping for a cataclysm, as there is no shortage of them in football, a sport where the verdicts, more or less, are tense by men.

The Théâtre du Châtelet, built between 1860 and 1862 by Gabriel Davioud at the request of Baron Haussmann, was packed. When Sadio Mané, author of a phenomenal football season with Liverpool, gets on the podium, he is welcomed by the living. Like Karim Benzema, Sadio Mané had every chance. Failing to be the Ballon d’Or, he received the Socrates Prize from the hands of PSG’s former glory, the Franco-Bresilian Rai. This award is an initiative of France Football. It aims to reward footballers and footballers engaged in social and charitable projects. And for this first edition, it is Sadio Mané who is highlighted for her actions around football in Senegal.

Sadio Mané, despite the trillions he brews, has never lost his mind. Nor has he forgotten his modest origins. He is committed to improving the living conditions of the most disadvantaged Senegalese strata. According to the sports daily STADE, the Senegalese international has made available to Bambaly his native village in Senegal, a cheque for 152,892,100 FCFA. That money was used to build a school.
