SENEGAL – Wind of description with the release of several prisoners

Assane Diouf, Guy Marius Sagna and Cledore Sène @Dakaractu.com

Most of the persons detained in the Adji Sarr/Ousmane Sonko case were released on Wednesday, 24 March 2021. They are activists Guy Marius Sagna, Cledore Sène, Assane Diouf and activists of Pastef Bignona. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is expected to soon announce its decision on the demands made by Birame Soulèye Diop, Abass Fall and the 19 demonstrators allegedly arrested during the demonstrations on Thursday 4 March following the summons and arrest of Ousmane Sonko.

The eighth cabinet judge, Samba Fall, was finally in favour of the requests for provisional freedoms made by the lawyers of Guy Marius Sagna, Cledore Sène and Assane diouf. The latter, who were arrested between 22 and 23 February, were being prosecuted for associating with criminals, participating in an insurrectionary movement, and acts likely to disturb public order. Their release, as well as that of all those arrested in the Adji Sarr/Ousmane Sonko case, was demanded by the Movement for the Defense of Democracy, civil society and religious leaders.
A call that seems heard since even Pastef Bignona activists were also released. It remains to be seen what will happen to Biram Souleye Diop, Abass Fall and the demonstrators arrested on Thursday, March 4, the day of the convocation of the leader of Pastef, Ousmane Sonko.

“There is a climate of space to consolidate peace, social cohesion and national harmony”, Moussa Sarr, who also hopes to see the imminent release of the other people arrested in the context of the demonstrations that broke out in Senegal from Thursday 4 to Monday 8 March.

However, just after her release, Clédore Sène showed great determination to continue the fight for respect for democracy and individual freedoms. He does not intend to calm down the game, quite the contrary, according to him, the fight is just beginning. “I am not calling for calm. We are moving towards solutions to all the problems related to freedoms and democracy…. The demands also concern the widening of the spaces of freedom, the respect of the republican calendar, the consolidation and the reconquest of certain democratic gains. A whole range of demands that will definitely bring back calm,” he says, in a threatening tone.

Guy Marius Sagna simply thanked the Senegalese people for their support which undoubtedly led to his release. “I just got out of Sébikotane prison. I thank the Senegalese people, the African people and the whole world. I got out of prison because of you.Thank you, see you soon.”

Recall that the arrest of Guy Marius Sagna, Assane Diouf and Cléodore Sene follows an audio message sent by Clédore Sène in which he calls for action to push back the government. Here is the content of the voice message sent on Sunday, February 21, 2021 via Whatsapp.

“You forgot that the fight starts on Tuesday (today). We are now in the time of action, because I think we have communicated enough. We are getting organized at the grassroots level.Probably on Tuesday, we are moving towards the lifting of parliamentary immunity and the arrest of Sonko. There is only the day of tomorrow (yesterday Monday). Even today (Sunday), we worked all day. It’s going to be complicated, because I don’t dare propose anything else to Assane Diouf. I put him in touch with some Pikine guys.”
