SENEGAL: Sadio Mané, from Bambali to Liverpool, a long story!

Sadio Mané was born on April 10, 1992 in Bambali, a small village of the Balanté ethnic group in the Sédhiou region of southern Senegal. Very early passionate about the ball, he had however a small constraint: his parents. Indeed, his imam father of the mosque of Bambaly, strongly opposed this passion of his child.

Often, young Mané was fleeing the house to go to the city to be detected. The first time he went to Dakar to find a club but his father went to pick him up and brought him back. In an interview with SFR Sport, Sadio Mané said that he often repeated this to his parents: “Either you let me play, or I will continue to run away.”

The second time, he went to Mbour, another region of Senegal where he passed tests finally satisfactory. “When the detector saw me with my shorts and my shoes too damaged, he underestimated me but at the end of the game he quickly told me he took me,” he says smiling in the same interview.

In reality, he began to evolve in the “Navétanes”, a popular football championship between inhabitants of different neighborhoods. Finally, he joined the Académie Génération Foot in Senegal whose Fc Metz in France is the direct partner.

His professional career began with Fc Metz on January 14, 2012 but the team was relegated to national at the end of the season. Then Sadio Mané joined the Austrian Red Bull Salzburg club in 2013 and managed to make a name for himself by including three triplets in the 2013/2014 season.

On 1 September 2014, he joined the English club Southampton for 4 years with a contract worth 15 million euros. He spent only 2 years with this club and his performances pushed him to dream to evolve in bigger teams. Among his performances with Southampton, there is this famous hat-trick in 2 minutes 56 seconds against Aston Villa on May 16, 2016, which allows him to beat the record of Robbie Fowler who had managed the same feat but in 4 minutes 33 seconds in 1994.

On June 28, 2016, Sadio Mané signed a five-year contract with the Liverpool Reds, estimated at 36 million euros. During his first season, he is part of the first-team type team.

In 2017, he is aligned with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, a trio that will forever mark the history of world football. Sadio Mané becomes the third player, after Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba, to score more than 10 goals in the Champions League.

This season 2018/2019, he is co-best of the championship with Mohamed Salah and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang with 22 achievements. He won the Champions League on 1 June 2019 with the Reds against Spurs Tottenham 2-0 and caused the penalty that allowed Mohamed Salah to score the opening goal of the game.

The child of Bambaly then continues the performances every year and is now courted by the biggest clubs in the world such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint Germain or Fc Barcelona.

Sadio Mané is also a very sociable man and he likes to help the inhabitants of his village. He handed over an envelope of more than 150 million francs for the construction of a modern high school in Bambaly. During Ramadan 2019, he gave each notable of his village 50,000 francs.

Currently, Sadio Mané will play the knockout round on Friday, June 5, 2019 against Uganda and dreams of winning the trophy with the national team.
