CHAD – President Idriss Deby Itno succumbs to gunshot wounds

Chad is in mourning. The head of state, Idriss Déby, was killed while on the front line against a rebel group that took up arms on 11 April 2021, the day of the presidential election. Re-elected with 79.32% of the vote according to the official results released this Monday, April 19, the President of the Republic, Idriss Deby, who has been running the country for 30 years, will have enjoyed only one day of his sixth mandate. He died on Tuesday 20 April 2021 at the age of 68, according to information provided by the army on state television.

These soldiers of the Chadian people claimed on Monday 19 April that more than 300 rebels have been killed in the northern provinces of Tibesti and Kanem since the start of hostilities on Sunday 11 April, presidential election day.Five Chadian soldiers perished during these attacks. The army reassured the population that the situation was under control and that calm should return. But, this Saturday, April 17, around the afternoon, the fighting resumed leading to the death of the President of the Republic. According to the announcement of the army, his son, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, a 37-year-old army general, will act as interim head of a military council. 

It should be noted that Idriss Deby had been at the head of Chad since 2 September 1990 following a coup d’état perpetrated against the then head of State, Hissène Habré.Promoted to the rank of marshal in August 2020, he had just been promoted to the head of the country for a sixth term, according to provisional results released on Monday, April 19, 2021 by the national electoral instance.
