HAITI – Assassination of President Jovenel Moïse: Four mercenaries killed and two others arrested

After the heinous and inhuman assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse on the night of Tuesday 6 to Wednesday 7 July 2021, the authorities of the country had sworn to find the culprits. Thus, on the evening of Wednesday, July 7, 2021, the Haitian police in its operations managed to get hold of two assailants by killing four of them. 

President Jovenel Moïse was killed by an armed commando in the middle of the night at his home in Petion-Ville on Tuesday 6 to Wednesday 7 July 2021. We know more about the killers of the Haitian president. According to Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, the assailants were “foreigners who spoke English and Spanish”. 

Local police announced that they had killed two of them and arrested four others on Wednesday, 7 July. “Four mercenaries were killed, two intercepted under our control.Three police officers who had been taken hostage were recovered,” the chief of police said on national television.

Law enforcement is still fighting with assailants. This important information comes to us from the director of the national police of Haiti, Léon Charles who reassures the population in these words: “They will be killed or captured”.

The death of Jovenel Moïse plunged the Haitian people into disarray but also into great uncertainty. According to the local press, the remains of the head of state were found riddled with 12 bullets, his office and his room ransacked. The country is still under siege.The first lady shot in the attack is in Miami, USA to be treated. The Prime Minister says the president’s children are “safe”. 

At the international level, the UN Security Council, which is due to meet urgently on Thursday 9 July, said it was “deeply shocked”.
