Karim Wade and Khalifa Sall will not be able to stand in the next local elections. For good reason, the bill to amend the electoral code automatically eliminates the two politicians. The maintenance of articles L31 and L32 does not work in their favour since, according to the new document studied thoroughly by the daily Source A, persons sentenced to imprisonment from one year to five years do not have the legal right to register on the electoral roll. Therefore, they lose their eligibility.

The former mayor of Dakar, Khalifa Sall, and Karim Wade, the son of former head of state Abdoulaye Wade, will not have the chance to take part in the next local elections scheduled for January 2022. The new bill on the amended electoral code that will be presented to MEPs on Thursday 8 July 2022 has not deleted articles L31 and L32 as desired by the actors of the Political Dialogue and the experts in charge of auditing the electoral register. “The articles in question deprive anyone convicted of the right to vote, generally speaking, automatically and undifferentiated. Persons convicted of crimes, those sentenced to a suspended sentence of imprisonment for crimes of theft, fraud, breach of trust, drug trafficking, embezzlement and subtraction by public officials, corruption and influence peddling, counterfeiting and in general for one of the offences punishable by a sentence of more than 5 years in prison should not be entered on the list of electors.” , says the aforementioned articles.
