Senegal was chosen by the 2021 Natura resource governance (Nrgi) Good Governance of Natural Resources Index as the leading country in Africa in oil, gas and mining management. The country of Teranga is thus shaking Ghana which occupied this place since 2017.

With a score of 82/100, Senegal is now the best country in Africa that manages its natural resources well. The country is very close even to the world leader, Norway which has a score of 86/100. The Nrgi experts found that the two sectors, notably oil and gas and mining, are in the highest performance range of the index.

Senegal now appears on the continent’s oil map. Since 2014, discoveries of hydrocarbons in the country have been multiplied, hence the importance of good management in these sectors. For Natura resource governance, Senegal faces «the same governance challenges», particularly with regard to transparency in the awarding of titles and the publication of contracts.

As a reminder, the 2021 Natura resource governance (Nrgi) Good Governance of Natural Resources Index is an independent non-profit NGO created in 2013 and based in New York.
