IVORY COAST: The son of the former president gets 6 months in prison.

Six months in prison without issuing a deposit warrant and a fine of 500,000 CFA Francs. This is the sentence that was sent Friday, January 26, 2018 to Michel Gbagbo, son of former President Laurent Gbagbo. He was tried for “false news disclosure”.

The son of the former Ivorian president was tried in correctional for “disclosure of false news”. He said in an interview with the news site Koaci.com in May 2016, that “250 people were still detained in Ivorian prisons” and that “300 people (…) indicted and placed under arrest since 2011 were brought disappeared “. As for Laurent Despas, boss of koaci.com, prosecuted for spreading false news, he is sentenced to pay 10 million CFA francs of fine.

Michel Gbagbo’s lawyer said he was going to appeal the convictions, “which could be a serious precedent for press freedom in Côte d’Ivoire (…). Journalists could now be convicted for simply collected the words of people or personalities if the Ivorian power considers not to share this point of view.
