14 lists are running for Senate elections. They want to win 12 seats in the Senate. The race is now underway. The 14 nominations were submitted to the Nominating Body (OVEC). Political parties and independent parties came to their offices to register.

The candidates of the IRMAR, which is the platform of the political parties in power, are finally presented in the open. The identity of the candidates that the current regime will support is also revealed. Herimanana Raafimahefa and Sylvain Rabetsaroana lead the IRMAR list for the province of Antananarivo.

The Malagasy Miara-mianga Party (MMM) has shown its determination to sit in the Senate pushing Hajo Andrianarinarivelo’s party to stand in the senatorial elections. He’s planning on taking two seats.

In fact, a majority of the candidates submitted came from the IRK platform, affiliated with President Andry Rajoelina. Independent candidates also submitted their applications. Overall, the number of applications remains low. This low turnout can be explained by the fact that the country’s two major opposition parties, the TIM and the HVM, have decided to boycott the senatorial elections.

All the candidates will be evaluated according to the documents submitted to the organization responsible for directing and organizing these senators. Many criteria will be studied by representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Directorate of Taxation and other technicians.

The Senate elections are scheduled for December 11, 2020.
