Berlin wants “sanctions” from the EU against the perpetrators of the coup in Niger, the German Foreign Ministry said Thursday on X (formerly Twitter).

“After the suspension of development and security cooperation, we want to implement sanctions in the EU against putschists,” German diplomacy wrote in a tweet on Thursday, August 17, 2023.

In recent days, the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, met with her French counterpart Catherine Colonna and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken about Niger, the ministry said.

Currently on a visit to Nigeria, German Cooperation Minister Svenja Schulze conducted “discussions in Abuja to see how best to support the efforts of ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States)”, he wrote.

“Germany supports African efforts to resolve the crisis in Niger,” he added.
Military officials from ECOWAS countries began their meeting on Thursday in Accra, Ghana, to discuss possible military intervention after the coup in Niger.
