The results of the first round of the presidential election were published by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the CNNI on Saturday, January 2, 2021. In the ring of the second round, Mohamed Bazoum will face his challenger Mahamane Ousmane.

Former Minister of the Interior, Mohamed Bazoum is the candidate of the ruling party, the Nigerian Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS)-Tarayya. He is the right-hand man of outgoing President Mahamadou Issoufou won 39.33% of the vote against 16.99% for former President of the Republic Mahamane Ousmane. A certain duel is emerging between the two politicians. Given the distribution of the electoral maps, Mohamed Bazoum, who hoped for victory in the first round, will have to seek an alliance to go to the second round if he wants to succeed his mentor.

Former President Mahamane Ousmane, who led the country from 1993 to 1996, will be overthrown by a military coup. Coming second, it could be acclaimed by the new alliance called Coalition for Alternation 20-21. This coalition was set up as a prelude to the presidential elections of 27 December 2020 and February 2021. She promised to support the candidate who would come second in the election on Sunday, December 27.
