Following the recent accidents at sea, Senegalese President Macky Sall offered his saddest condolences to the grieving families, on this painful occasion on the margins of the Council of Ministers, on Thursday, July 20, 2023.

In this context, the Head of State asked the Government to intensify the controls at the level of potential starting areas and sites, but also to deploy all monitoring devices, awareness-raising and support for young people through the strengthening of multi-sectoral public actions to combat illegal emigration,” reads the statement issued by the Council of Ministers on Thursday, 20 July 2023.
As a reminder, a pirogue, with 82 candidates on board for irregular migration, was rescued by the Spanish navy on the night of Tuesday, July 18, 2023 around 11 pm. D’Adhara salvamar’s crew assisted the boat disembarked at the Restinga.

These 79 men and 3 women migrants are all Senegalese who had left Senegal to reach Spain by sea. In a Tweet, Salvamento Maritimo informs that “the search was coordinated by CCS Tenerife, the Helimer 201 aircraft and the Sesmar 101 aircraft”.

A capsizing of a canoe in the breach of Saint-Louis (north) was noted last week, another sinking was reported on the Moroccan coast, precisely off the town of Dakhla. Among the victims, 8 young people living in Rufisque, this Sunday, July 16, 2023.
The latter, from Thiawlene, a fishing district, wanted to return to Europe by sea.

The tragedy occurred a few weeks ago, off the Mediterranean, with on board about forty young people from the department of Rufisque.

They set sail on Tuesday, July 4, in Mbour. However, the dream of these migrants to set foot on Spanish soil will break in Morocco. Originally, there was an accident that saw their boat hit a reef, before it shattered.

The provisional assessment listed on Sunday, July 16, 2023, in the Thiawlene neighborhood reported 8 dead and an undetermined number of seriously injured detained in a makeshift camp in Dakhla.

Daouda Ndoye, spokesman for the families of the victims spoke on the airwaves of the Rfm. He appealed to the authorities: I insist on the situation of the survivors who are in the hospitals in Dakhla. They need emergency assistance. If not, there will be more deaths. We call on the government to repatriate them as soon as possible. They are young people whose parents, through taxes and other means, contribute to the development of this country and are entitled to assistance.”

Initially scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the major march of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire – African Democratic Rally (PDCI-RDA), the main opposition party in Côte d’Ivoire, will finally take place on Saturday, June 14, 2025. This postponement was announced by the party’s Executive Secretary, who points out that the decision came after discussions between the PDCI leadership and the authorities of the Abidjan department. The details of these discussions have not been made public.

This demonstration, highly anticipated by the party’s activists and supporters, aims to support the candidacy of its president, Tidjane Thiam, in the presidential election of 2025, and to protest against his removal from the electoral list. A decision that the party qualifies as unfair and unacceptable, arguing for the right of all Ivorian citizens, including those with dual nationality, to participate in the political life of the country.

The route of the march remains unchanged: the protesters will leave from the SOCOCE space of the 2 Plateaux, in the municipality of Cocody, to head towards the headquarters of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI). The party calls for a strong peaceful mobilization in order to convey a clear message: demand inclusive, transparent and peaceful elections.

The removal of Tidjane Thiam and other opposition figures is mainly based on the issue of dual nationality, a legal provision that continues to be debated as the election approaches. The PDCI, which sees in Thiam a rally candidate capable of unifying the Ivorians, intends to make this march a highlight of its campaign and its democratic fight.
