The parliamentary elections to be held on 31 July 2022 in Senegal are already the subject of great concern. At the call of the opposition coalition Yewwi Askan Wi led by Ousmane Sonko, mayor of Ziguinchor and leader of the party Pastef Les Patriotes, a demonstration took place on Wednesday, June 08 at the Nation Square in Dakar.

The Place de la Nation was full of people. Thousands of demonstrators extremely revolted, protested against the invalidation of some candidates of the electoral list of Yewwi Askan Wi, opposition coalition led by Ousmane Sonko. They chanted slogans hostile to the central power of Dakar and warned against the organization of elections “truncated and not very credible” following this invalidation. According to some protesters, this is a means used by President Macky Sall to prepare the ground for a possible third term.

Ousmane Sonko was particularly determined to take part in the general elections in spite of everything. ” When an order is illegal, disobey. This demonstration is a warning to Macky Sall. Today we are launching our pre-campaign. Our only enemy is Macky Sall. If Yewwi Askan Wi does not participate in the elections, there will be no elections, he warned.

Even Barthélémy Dias, mayor of Dakar and member of the Yewwi Askan Wi coalition, is very upset about the rejection of their list. Whether it rains or snows, the national list will take part in the general elections… I, Barthélémy Dias, will never campaign without the national list. It is an absurdity orchestrated by the Minister of the Interior’, he hammered in front of the demonstrators who responded massively to the call.

Many observers of the Senegalese political scene have condemned this invalidation as conflicting and anti-democratic.
