The Seychelles Archipelago recorded a death related to Covid-19 on Sunday, January 3, 2021. He is a 57-year-old man who was in solitary confinement at the Perseverance Family Hospital treatment centre. “This is the first such death in Seychelles and comes amid a new surge in Covid-19,” a news release said. Since their first case appeared on 14 March 2020, 322 cases of coronavirus have been recorded in Seychelles. Faced with the communitarian transmission of the epidemic, Wavel Ramkalawan noted a deterioration of the situation. The President of Seychelles therefore asked his fellow citizens to take the situation seriously. “It’s easy to control Covid-19 if we take every precaution,” he said, urging wearing a mask. “We should all wear our masks. It’s easy to do. It’s also a call from the Ministry of Health,” he added.

The Commissioner of Public Health, Dr Jude Gedeon, announced the existence of four outbreaks of contamination in the country. The Department of Health has therefore decided to increase restrictions. Population displacements are now limited for the next 10 days. The “take-away” (take-away restaurants) and restaurants will be closed. For tourists, the border will remain open, but visitors will have to stay in their hotel 10 days before taking a PCR test. The President of Seychelles described the situation as “serious”. He stressed that the authorities were monitoring the situation closely. The Platinum Committee will meet again on in 10 days to assess the situation.
