It is this Monday, August 19, 2019 that the corruption trial against the former Sudanese head of state Omar el-Bashir was opened by the Khartoum Prosecutor’s Office. The latter will have to clarify the charges that are alleged against the former president dismissed since April 11 by a violent challenge.

Charges against Omar al-Bashir include “possession of foreign currency”, “bribery” and “trading in influence”. Thus, this first day was marked by the large sum of money found in his residence the day after his arrest. Indeed, large sums were mentioned, including the $ 90 million offered in several payments including $ 25 million from Saudi Crown Prince Muhammed Bel Salman and $ 65 million from King Abdullah who died in 2015. Faced with these arrests, the former head of state did not comment on the subject.

The day of Saturday, August 24 will still be the continuity but the defense will be entitled to replicas from the week that will follow. At this moment, several subjects will be debated and made clear in front of all the people. But for now, he can still say nothing while reassuring the opinion that things are in favor of the defense.

However, it is worth remembering that the Sudanese people want to be demanding of the former head of state. He is asking justice and the next civilian government to launch a lawsuit against the many crimes he committed during his 30 years in power. Thus, the Attorney General had opened an investigation last May for “murders” of protesters. It remains to be seen how far will go the innumerable charges brought against the former strongman of the country.
