The President of the Malawi Electoral Commission, Jane Ansah, resigned on Thursday evening, a new development that should not affect the resumption of the presidential election scheduled for the next month After her resignation on public television, Ansah said she was stepping down from her position of “trust”, despite the controversial circumstances that led to her departure. “I worked with clean hands and I don’t have a skeleton in my closet. I had a good fight and I’m glad I did it to the end,” she said.

The outgoing head of the Electoral Commission was a controversial figure in Malawi after the contested elections held in May 2019.

It was the target of nationwide protests against the conduct of the Commission-supervised elections in May 2019, which allowed President Peter Mutharika to hold a second term.

The result of the election was, however, successfully contested by the opposition, as the country’s Constitutional Court ordered a resumption of the presidential election in February within 150 days.

Ansah’s resignation comes a few weeks after the Supreme Court rejected the Constitutional Court’s complaint filed by Mutharika and the Commission.

Legal experts claim that the resignation will have no effect on the holding of the elections scheduled for 23 June.

Mutharika should appoint an interim head of the election management body, a short distance from the election.
