The Constitutional Court of Niger has proclaimed the final results of the first round of the presidential election of December 27, 2020. Thirty candidates were vying for the first round of this election but none of them obtained a majority. The first two, Bazoum Mohammed and Mahamane Ousmane, will therefore go to the second round to be decided.

Bazoum Mohammed, with 39.30% of the vote, and Mahamane Ousmane, 16.98%, are the two candidates authorized to stand in the second round of the Nigerien presidential election scheduled for February 21, 2021. “The Court therefore declares Mohamed Bazoum and Mahamane Ousmane candidates for the second round of the presidential election ”, we read in the press release of the Court which validated and proclaimed the final results of the first round of the presidential election of December 27, 2020.

The former Prime Minister, Seïni Oumarou, came third with 8.95% and Albabé Abouba 4th with 7.07% of the vote, detailed the Court. The participation rate is 69.68%, or 5.1 million voters. The appeals lodged by Ibrahim Yacoubou and Mahamane Ousmane respectively for the annulment of the votes and the first round of the presidential election were rejected by the Constitutional Court.

The two candidates must now begin negotiations with the 28 other unsuccessful candidates to forge alliances for the second round. Already, ten opposition candidates, including former President Salou Djibo, have created the Alliance of Candidates for Change (ACC), offering their support in the second round “to any interested candidate”, through a sharing of power once victory has been achieved. Note that the cumulative score of ACC candidates does not exceed 10%.
