SENEGAL: Parliament publishes list of ad hoc committee tasked with lifting Ousmane Sonko’s immunity

On Monday, 15 February, the Law Committee of the Senegalese National Assembly held its meeting to nominate the members of the ad hoc committee. It is the latter who will follow the procedure for the lifting of the parliamentary immunity of Deputy Ousmane Sonko accused of rape by a young masseuse named Adji Sarr.

The lifting of the parliamentary immunity of MP Ousmane Sonko, who is being brought to justice for rape, is well underway. Indeed, after a meeting held on Monday, February 15, the Law Committee of the National Assembly made public the composition of the ad hoc committee responsible for monitoring the procedure for lifting the immunity of the leader of Pastef.

Thus, were chosen for the coalition Benno Bokk Yaakaar, the majority, Demba Babayel Sow, Mame Bounama Sall, Pape Biram Touré, Adji Diarra Mbergane Kanouté, Mously Diakhaté, Mamadou Woury Bailo Diallo, Dié Mandiaye Ba and Aymérou Gningue.

The unregistered deputies will be represented by Fatou Ndiaye of Idrissa Seck’s Rewmi party. As for the Freedom and Democracy parliamentary group, its president, Sheikh Bara Dolli Mbacké, said that his political party, the Senegalese Democratic Party, will consult to give its answer in the evening.

Since February 5, the country has been shaken by a sordid rape case involving opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. The latter accused the regime of Macky Sall of conspiracy to liquidate a political opponent and mask the shortcomings of its governance.At a press conference, he called his supporters to the resistance.

Clashes with the security forces broke out on Monday, February 08, at Sonko’s home where his supporters had gathered to oppose his summons by the Gendarmerie’s Research Section. Private cars, supermarkets and even the homes of supporters of power were targeted. Many arrests have taken place.Since then, it has been the political battle in the media and social networks. And the lawyers of both sides, by proxy press, have already begun the legal battle.
