SENEGAL: The public prosecutor decides on the arrests.

The Prosecutor of the Republic of Senegal, Serigne Bassirou Gueye, gave the reasons for the arrests of activist Guy Marius Sagna and journalist Adama Gaye apprehended for statements deemed inadequate on social networks.

In a statement on Monday, August 5, 2019, the Public Prosecutor said that Guy Marius Sagna is being prosecuted for spreading false news while Adama Gaye responds to the crime of insulting the Head of State according to Article 80 of the Constitution of Senegal.

Guy Marius Sagna is prosecuted by the head of spreading false news following his statements that France was planning an attack against Senegal. Such statements, beyond their false nature and the psychosis they create, can have serious consequences for the tranquility and safety of citizens and foreigners living in Senegal.
