FOOTBALL – Angel Di Maria announces international retirement after Copa América 2024

A page in the history of the Argentine team will turn next summer. At 35 and after winning the Copa América in 2021 and the World Cup in 2022, Angel Di Maria officially confirmed that the Copa América 2024, organized in the United States (June 20-July 16), will be his last tournament under the albicelest colors before his international retirement.

“The last game of the playoffs has arrived for me, I cannot express with words the affection of people that fills my soul, I enjoy every second of this affection and that of my teammates, them, my friends, without them this story would not have had the same meaning. The affection of each of them made me what I am today. Unfortunately, we cannot let pass the events that occurred at the stadium, no one deserves this mistreatment, nor the blows, families and children frightened in the middle of a stadium where the only thing that should have happened was to watch and enjoy a game in what is football folklore. I hope this doesn’t happen again. As players, we will always stand up for our people without a doubt. I will wear the Argentine jersey for the last time at the Copa América.

With all the pain of the soul and feeling a knot in the throat I say goodbye to the most beautiful thing that happened to me in my career, wear it, sweat it and FEEL with all the pride. Thanks to the supporters, thanks to the family, thanks to the friends and the colleagues of selection, we continue to write history and it will remain for eternity. Go Argentina,” he posted on his Instagram account on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

The election of the members of the executive committee of the Guinean Football Federation, convened by the Standardization Committee on November 26, 2023, did not take place due to a lack of quorum. This election was therefore postponed to a later date.

The FIFA envoy invites Guinean football players to put aside their disagreements and make compromises for the happiness of football lovers.  “Let’s put the egos aside, think about Guinean football, think about the journalists who live off it. Let’s compromise and move forward,” said Gelson Fernandes.

According to the FIFA Special Envoy, it is up to Guinea to deal with this problem. “Guinea is master of its own destiny. We will give our position. Guinea chooses which federation it wants to be in. The ball is in Guinea’s court. If she wants to move forward we will help her, but the ball is not in the CAF’s or FIFA’s court,” he suggested.

Referring to the failure to elect the members of the Executive Committee, Gelson Fernandes acknowledged that this is a serious situation and said he regretted the consequences it could have on the Syli as the CAN approaches which will take place in January-February 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire.

Finally, he invited Guinean football players to put their ego aside to allow Guineans to continue to live their passion to the full.

The term of the current Standards Committee is set for 30 November 2023. Guinean football is waiting.
