NIGERIA – Oil tanker explodes, more than 64 injured in the north

At least 64 people were injured on Saturday in the explosion of a tanker truck in Kano State, northern Nigeria, a local official said on Sunday.

The fire department received an emergency call on Saturday afternoon that a tanker truck carrying gasoline had caught fire and exploded at a gas station in the community of Sharada, in the municipality of Kano, Saminu Abdullahi said in a statement, spokesman for the Kano fire department.

“We quickly dispatched personnel and vehicles to the scene,” Mr Abdullahi said.

Of the 64 wounded, who were burned to varying degrees, eight were firefighters, the spokesman said, adding that there had been no deaths, however, and that the wounded were being treated in nearby hospitals.

The tanker truck was delivering petroleum products to the service station when the incident occurred.
